Last week our clergy conference focused on environmental justice, and our bishop asked us to reflect on our own connections, and our family's, with the earth and with creation. I thought of my family's deep roots in the Salinas Valley and the way in which I feel connected there, despite never having lived there.
When we told our stories in small groups, someone said "Stacey, don't you have a connection with the water, since you row every day?" And it was startling to realize that my connection with water is so close that it has almost become an unconscious connection. So that today, as we sat in our eight with the wind blowing and we pointed out Orion in the sky in the complete darkness of 6 am, I gave thanks for this enduring connection which truly does make me feel part of the earth, the seas, and all .
Our workout was a bust, but as Alice Lee commented, the sunrise was worth every moment of it. Arising in God's creation under a skywide pink and yellow cloud can't but make us pray from Isaiah,
Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of God has dawned upon you.
