This morning the wind was howling, the waves and tides were high and there were too many accidents waiting to happen. So we rowed out to the ferry basin, were told to row back by our coach, and then spent the better part of an hour trying to figure out where to be and what to do. Our coxswain Lindy showed how non-anxious leadership can make a potentially dangerous situation safe. She was calm, assured, polite, decisive, and we all followed her commands as other rowers and other coaches were trying to tell us what to do in not-so-calm ways.
I was thinking that in the past week I've had the privelege of watching a variety of people act in this way. Our Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori at our clergy conference, Chad Smith at our Standing Committee meetings, then Lindy today. Truly a trait to emulate!
