Today we practiced starts for our upcoming race in San Diego. The start in a rowing race involves a few short, fast strokes to get the boat up and moving. It's my favorite part of the race; it demands absolute concentration yet calm, strength yet finesse, it's noisy, splashy, it's focusing inside the boat while all sorts of other things are happening in boats on either side. And when it's done right you have the sense that all nine people in the boat are so completely together that the boat could simply fly out of the water.
My best moments in ministry are like this. It's something about bringing all parts of oneself to a particular moment with a group of people all intent on the same thing. It's the thing of synergy, of union, of Holy Spirit in which more can be accomplished together than can every be accomplished alone.

Just discovered your blog thanks to an article on blogs in the Pacific Church News. I will look forward to reading your reflections on rowing and ministry. (I have an ancient Concept2B erg in my study and row but not nearly as seriously as you.. and I am an Episcopal priest, too.)
