All of this reminded me how fun AND how "insider-ish" all of this language is...only rowers know, and moreover only rowers care about these terms. Kind of like the church. All faith groups and denominations have their favorites, and Episcopalians are no different. The sexton, the vestry, the verger, the Gospel side and the Epistle side, the reredos, the aumbry. I think it's important to remember in both places, rowing and church, that the terms are only useful when they are used, and known and not made to be "precious" so that they exclude people in their usage. What are the church terms that people need to know, and which need to always be translated?
