This morning my friend Ari beat his own personal best for 2000 meters by over seven seconds. We could hear Ari erging behind us (we were doing a MUCH more relaxed workout!) and his teammate Alex coaching him. Ari finished and we all cheered. And Ari thanked Alex. And Alex said "you did it yourself." And Ari thanked Alex again and Alex repeated himself.
Such a display of teamwork. Such unselfish and modest talk on the part of both men. The exchange was so inspiring to me that I thought about it all day. I thought of the religious virtue of humility, which we so often confuse with humiliation. They are not at all the same. Humility is that ability to reflect exactly what one is, no more, no less. Ari was able to acknowledge his effort and Alex's help. Alex was able to compliment Ari's effort at the same time, knowing that he was involved. Humility. True teamwork. Thank you, Ari and Alex!
