Racing for a Seat

The past couple of days our team has participated in the time-honored tradition of seat racing. Basically, people are switched from boat to boat and the coach's goal is to discover who can make a boat move faster.

It never ceases to amaze me as I watch my teammates be so gracious, so self-deprecating, so dependably positive in a one-on-one, competitive situation where one person wins and another loses the seat race. What is not won or lost is the sense that we are in solidarity, in unity with each other. Today is someone's day, tomorrow will be another's. And through it all, we keep rowing!
