Today we had a row from heaven. The weather was far from perfect, but from the very first stroke our boat was rock solid set, light, sharp, very long, happy. Together. There was no talking in the boat, no whining, no suggestions from the peanut (us) gallery. Just focused rowing. Sarah our coxswain encouraged us, and it was one of those workouts you don't want to ever end.
It made me think about how hard we try for perfection, try so hard sometimes that we almost use too much energy trying to make it happen. Today it was as if we all decided to let the good rowing come through. And it did. I started thinking about perfection, striving for it, which in my book has always been a virtue. And which has always taken a lot of energy. Today did not take a lot of energy. It GAVE me energy.
What if we regarded perfection as full consciousness, rather than full effort? As a gift of awareness, rather than a result of hard work? All I know is that today was extremely satisfying, a sensation I want to experience again. In rowing, and in other places in my life. How about you?
